Knights of the Old Republic Alignment

Alignment in KotOR is a finicky thing that will pop up from time to time. Most people will end up taking one path and sticking with it, just as taking the Dark path or taking the light path, although a few people will always be the Grey Jedi in between the two groups.

[edit] How to Gain Alignment

You gain alignment from several different factors throughout the game. The first one that will come about will be simple giving and taking of money. For example, one of the first things you come across on Taris will be a fight between two gangsters and a man who needs the money. Give them man money and defend him, and you get light points. Kill both the man and the gangsters and take their money, you get dark points.

The second is from quests. Many dark sided people can turn down quests easily, or they can just go about and do the quest, but do it for their benefit. Force out extra cash for doing it, and such, will also get you more dark points. Turn the award down after doing the quest correctly, and you get light points.

The third can come from simple discussions, and choices you make in them. Do you talk to a person kindly and make the correct decisions in discussions, or do you always put them down? While not as often as the others occurring, you can get points from this.

While it may seem like the light side will always have less credits, there are many quests where they will force the money on you, and if you try and kill them you will get nothing.

A good way to know if you are doing things the right way? Take along a member of the party when doing things. For example, if Mission Vao or Carth Onasi applaud your choice, you will gain light side points, most likely. If Canderous Ordo or HK-47 approve of your choices, it's likely you will get dark side points.

So, what's so bad about alignment anyways? You can change which side you are on, but one of the pluses is that you can do certain force powers cheaper or for more Force Points in combat. A person on the dark side can heal badly, but they can also send jolts of electricity out easily. Likewise with those on the light side, they might be able to heal, but they will also be bad at using force powers like Force Lightning.

There are some times when you can also get conversation related pluses, but these are rare and change nothing in the game, and are just little bonuses for those looking for them.
