Coruscant was a city-world, as well as the center of government for both the Galactic Republic and the Galactic Empire. Coruscant was called a city world because the entire world was, essentially, on large continued city, and was the center of economy across many sectors.

Coruscant was also where the head of the Jedi, the Jedi Council, would have resided in times when the order existed, which, admittedly, were intermittant. Many essential war efforts and assignments went from this world out to many others, as a result. Coruscant was also believed to be where the Human race originated from although it was never proved.
